About Rockmart

The city of Rockmart, Georgia is located in the northwest part of the state in the Coosa Valley area. The city is primarily in Polk County but does extend into portions of Paulding County and as a small city it does not have a public transit system. The city has a mayor-council form of government and works to uphold the city motto “Where Past & Present Stroll Side by Side.” The city is known for the Rockmart Downtown Historic District which is on the National Register of Historic Places and draws countless tourists every year. The city has been home to several notable people like actor Danny Roberts, MLB pitcher Bill Calhoun and NFL running back Nathan Dean.

Rockmart is named for the abundance of natural limestone, slate, iron shale and clay in the area. Colonel Seaborn James offered land and money to Southern Railway to build a station in the budding town and thanks to that station the town grew and was incorporated in 1872. The historic downtown area features a variety of buildings and sites of architectural and historic significance from various eras as well as Seaborn Jones Memorial Park. The park was known for years as the Wayside Park but was renamed in 2002 to honor the man that helped develop the town. The picnic is popular among picnickers, cyclist, pedestrians and children. Another local attraction is the Silver Comet Trail and Depot. The trail is built on a portion of what was once the Seaboard Airline Railroad and runs for 61.5 miles from Smyrna, Georgia to the Georgia/Alabama state line crossing through both the city of Rockmart and Seaborn Jones Memorial Park.

According to the United States Census of 2010, the city of Rockmart spans 4.3 square miles and has a population of 4,199 giving it a population density of 900 people per square mile. The economy of Rockmart is settled and stable held up by both blue collar and white collar efforts. The 1990s brought a period of economic growth to the city with the opening of several new restaurants, shops and businesses as well as bringing an increase in residential construction. According to in 2012 Rockmart had an estimated median household income of $33,480 and an estimated per capita income of $23,521. The site also reported that in 2012 the estimated value for a house or condo in the city was $90,530 and the gross rent was $601.
